“Lady in Satin” is Billie Holiday’s penultimate recording and was released in 1959, the year of her death. Although the repertoire is derived from the Great American Songbook, Lady in Satin is unlike any of Holiday’s previous recordings as she specifically chose to be accompanied by the lush orchestral arrangements of Ray Ellis and personally hand picked each song for its lyrics.

On “when soft rains fall” we wanted to re-visit the songs from “Lady in Satin” and while paying tribute to Billie Holiday’s greatness, present our own perspective on them now, some 60 years after her timeless masterpiece. In addition to the 12 songs from “Lady In Satin” we include two solo interludes (Big Stuff and Lady Sings the Blues) and The Day Lady Died, which features the great poem by Frank O’Hara.

Billie Holiday and “Lady In Satin” has had a profound and lasting impact on us musically and emotionally. Now in the 40th year of our friendship we are very proud to share “when soft rains fall” with you.
